LATEST NEWS:
Telegraph writer says Mumbai terrorists were 'imitating' the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 29 November 2008 10:50

Writing in the Daily Telegraph yesterday, Amir Taheri offered his own explanation for the terrible slaughter in Mumbai:

"...it looks as if the perpetrators were trying to imitate the tactic of ghazwa, used by the Prophet against Meccan caravans in his decade-long campaign to seize control of the city. The tactic consists of surprise no-holds-barred attacks simultaneously launched against a caravan or settlement with the aim of demoralising the enemy and hastening his capitulation."

If you do not agree with Taheri's explanation and believe that it is intended to portray Islam itself as being inherently violent then do let the editor know by writing a short letter to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Subhan Anwar  - re: Amir Taheri’s article draws unfair parallels with Islamic history of ghazwa     |2008-11-29 16:04:25
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am really disappointed that Daily telegraph has published an article by Amir Taheri which bases its parallels with Islamic history unfairly. This only serves to show the ignorance of the author on this subject and only increases the misunderstandings between the Muslims and others. I hope that telegraph’s journalism would have higher goals then to incite hatred towards Muslims and to malign a religion and its final Prophet which has a following of 1 in 6 people in the world.
This article fails to put into context the ghazwa (expeditions) used by the Prophet (pbuh) and misleads people on the aims and happenings of the expeditions, which ironically is exactly what these extremists do to achieve their own ends. The ghazwa expeditions of the Prophet (pbuh) were for quick and bloodless gains of goods which the Muslims had lost when they were forced to flee from their homes in Makkah due to oppression. You will not find a single example of the Prophet (pbuh) ever allowing a life of anyone to be taken unjustly for conquering of cities or for any other reason. Islam does not allow regardless of faith, race and sex to take a life unjustly. In fact when the Prophet (pbuh) did return to Makkah as a ‘conqueror’ it is noted that there was no blood shed on this conquest even by orientalist.
To equate this just war between two groups fought with just principles to the unjust killing of the people in Mumbai serves only to further the extremists cause and decrease trust between honourable people. I hope this email clarifies to you the shortcomings in this article. If as an editor you have integrity and are just then an apology should not be too much to ask of you for the unfounded and negative parallels that this writer has chosen to drawn between the Mumbai killings and the ghazwa expeditions of the Prophet (pbuh). I await your reply.

Yours truly,
Subhan Anwar.

Subhan - nice try at a letter but remember that newspapers only usually print ones that are around 150 words long. Try cutting it down a bit.

Sir,

Amir Tehari seems to follow the line that, 'the bigger the lie, the more likely people are to believe it.' Contrary to the lies he rehearses, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) laid down clear rules, even in times of war, forbiddiing his soldiers from taking any innocent life - including women, children and the elderly - only those who fought the Muslims on the battlefield could be fought against. Furthermore, he turns history in its head - it was the Meccans who had attacked, tortured and massacred the Muslims for more than 20 years and yet Prophet Muhammad forgave them and granted them an amnesty when he conquered Mecca. Prophet Muhammad would have been the first to condemn the actions of the Mumbai terrorists and The Telegraph should know better than to print the views of someone who clearly has no knowledge of either the Prophet Muhammad's life or teachings.
Yours sincerely,

Dr Raghib Ali MA (cantab),
Oxford.
