Muslim groups in Luton warn against playing into the hands of EDL provocateurs

Muslim groups in Luton have called on the community to be especially vigilant this coming Saturday and not allow a repeat of events at the end of August when a group of over 200 Asian youths - predominantly Muslim - gathered and rioted in the town centre.

The youths had responded to rumours of a far right anti-Muslim protest, rumours that turned out to be unfounded.

A number of youths were arrested that day following attacks on the police and several youths are believed to have since been arrested and police expect to charge up to twenty-five individuals with violent disorder offences.

The English Defence League website notes that they have officially been banned by the Home Office from holding their planned demonstration this Saturday in Luton, but it is feared that rumours of their presence on Saturday could spark counter-protests which could in turn be manipulated by those with a violent agenda.

A number of Islamic groups in Luton including the Islamic Society of Britain have issued the following guidelines to their community and have urged khateebs in mosques to incorporate them in the Friday prayers as a reminder to all:

  • Do not be afraid of the fascists -  they have a strategy to influence the next general election and all this is part of their plan.
  • Provoking Muslims to riot is part of their plan - they aim to highlight Muslims as being troublesome and further anti-Muslim sentiments amongst the wider UK population.
  • Allow the police deal with them.
  • If you do feel the need to protest, show discipline at all times and do not overreact, otherwise you are falling into their trap.
  • If you hear rumours of Muslims being attacked, get them verified first by checking with the Bury Park Community Centre or Radio Ramadan Luton.
  • Be aware that there may be troublemakers who want to bring about violent confrontation.

Meanwhile, the EDL extremists have issued a new promotional video on YouTube about their forthcoming demonstration in Manchester on 10th October 2009 which they have advertised as a 'Day of Reckoning'.

It is worth noting the extensive use the EDL video makes of the moronic antics of the tiny fringe group al-Muhajiroun, the actions of al-Qa'ida inspired terrorists and inflammatory headlines in the UK press.
